Sustainable Menstruation in India

Menstruation is going through a transformative time, with the introduction of a plethora of organic pads, menstrual cups, bio-degradable, and even compostable pads. This shift to more sustainable menstrual products is especially pronounced with recent investments in women health start-ups in India and country-wide and government initiatives to reduce the amount of waste produced in India.

Taboo and Stigma Regarding Menstruation

In India, there are sometimes significant restrictions placed on the lives of menstruators during their menstruation. Some of these restrictions are related to religion and understandings of religious texts, while others have roots in cultural understandings of menstruation. In some cases, individuals are not told about menstruation until menarche, forbade to enter the kitchen, places of worship, touch certain food items, e.t.c. Menstrual stigma and taboo is pervasive in many parts of the world today. Such restrict can severily hinder a woman's ability to enjoy numerous aspects of social life.
